Students Helping Students
Heald College of Honolulu students have united in helping seniors in the foster care system transition into higher education. Their fundraising provides scholarships to attend community college, the university, or trade/vocational schools. This project is spearheaded by former foster youth, Kintaro Yonekura, who utilized educational services provided by Family Programs Hawai‘i to go back to college himself. He now wants to provide similar opportunities for his foster brothers and sisters.
Several classes were involved in raising funds to establish the Family Programs Hawai‘i Scholarship Fund. Ms. Lynette Kim’s salesmanship class raised $5,000 by cold calling local businesses to establish the perpetual scholarship fund. Ms. Kim’s marketing class made an Angel Tree and decorated the tree with paper angels sold to students over the holiday season, raising $2,500 for the scholarship fund. Ms. Kim’s Humanities class held bake sales in the student lounge selling $1,500 in goods for the scholarship fund.
Currently, 20 foster youth have received scholarship assistance through the Family Programs Hawai‘i Scholarship fund supported by Heald students fundraising efforts. “It has been very heartwarming to learn valuable business skills while at the same time giving back to foster youth transitioning into adulthood,” claims Kintaro. “Without the lov e and generosity of the students and Ms. Kim, this scholarship program would have never come together.”
